Vacuum Belt

The vacuum belt is an integral part for your vacuum cleaner, sometimes needing replacement to ensure functionality.

If your vacuum cleaner doesn’t seem to be working properly, you could need a new vacuum belt.  This is one of the most important pieces of equipment on your appliance, as it really controls the core of a vacuum’s motion.  The belt is responsible for turning the brushes on the bottom of the vacuum, and is also responsible for providing the forward motion that makes pushing an upright vacuum as easy as possible.  Both canister and upright models feature vacuum belts, and both will need to be changed in order to prolong the life and working order of your vacuum.

Both canister and upright vacuums use different types of vacuum belts.  A canister has a much smaller belt, as the push device you use for floors is smaller than the average upright model.  This means they aren’t as durable, and can be prone to breaking down more easily than an upright model.  Signs to look for include difficulty when pushing the device, and also slow or no motion from the bristles at the bottom.  In either case you’ll need a new vacuum belt, in order for your vacuum to function normally again.  On the typical canister model you’ll have to change the belt at least once every six to eight months with regular use.

With an upright vacuum the belt is usually stronger and more durable, but will still require service eventually.  The best way to prevent this and prolong a vacuum belt’s life, is to clean your vacuum at least once a month.  You’d be best served cleaning the vacuum after every use, but this isn’t always a realistic prospect because of the busy lives most people lead.  But as often as you can manage, make sure to remove anything from the vacuum’s bristles.  Sometimes hair, or string that is embedded within a carpet can get caught in a bristle’s gears.  In that case you’ll want to remove the items so that the bristles can move freely, otherwise you’re putting extra stress on the vacuum belt.

Typically the average vacuum belt is around $5-6, so changing one out to prolong your vacuum’s use is much more affordable than buying a $100 dollar appliance a few times a year.  You can either do this yourself, or even have your vacuum serviced at a professional establishment.  Stores like Sears provide for vacuum repair and also changing out vacuum belts if you are unable to handle it yourself.  Usually there will be a small fee for workmanship, accompanied by the price of the belt itself.  But that will have your vacuum working normally again, and even as good as new.

If you plan on changing the vacuum belt yourself, before purchasing a new one, be sure to refer to your owner’s manual for the right size for your unit.  Otherwise you could end up purchasing a belt that isn’t usable by your vacuum, which can be a big of hassle.  The best way to avoid this is do your research beforehand, to ensure you have the tools for the job, and the proper vacuum belt for your cleaner.
